Caboolture showgrounds must continue with existing uses, particularly the markets and highly successful annual show which must continue to receive our full support. While council may have other sites earmarked further south, we must remember Caboolture and surrounds are located on a totally different river system and may be far more suitable as an evacuation facility for northern centres, even the Sunshine Coast, in the event of a major flood or cyclone.
Further investigations may be needed to assess the need for any upgrades or extra infrastructure at the showgrounds but such improvements would only enhance the site as a valuable peoples’ hub and venue, creating a ‘win-win” outcome for the community.
It is just minutes from Caboolture’s CBD, and Bruce and D’Aguilar highways, is adjacent to the main north-south railway line, and is just 5 minutes from the Caboolture Hospital, police headquarters and other emergency services. Even Council’s works depot and the SES are virtually alongside.
The recent devastation from tropical cyclone Winston in Fiji just reinforces our need to be fully prepared. Consider the implications, for example of a tsunami hitting Bribie Island.
Evacuation Centre – Major Disaster:
I will support the temporary use of the Caboolture showgrounds as a major evacuation centre in the event of a cyclone or some other major disaster.
It could very quickly be modified in an emergency to cater for a tent city for thousands of evacuees. It is fully fenced and flood free, has fully maintained buildings and offices already in place, many with their own kitchens. Much of it is grassed with underground power, and helicopter landing pads could easily be created.
